Educational Goals

Medical technologists (MT), as most of the graduates of this department will be, play an important role in hospitals usually assisting physicians in diagnosis. The major job of an MT is to complete whatever diagnostic tests have been assigned by the physicians, and to come up with data accurately, precisely, and quickly, that will allow doctors to identify the cause of their patients' illness, thereby enabling physicians to make the correct decisions. Therefore, medical technologists must understand the principles and laboratory procedures in detail. Thus one of the purposes of this department is to train and teach students to become skilled medical technologists.

The classes provided by this department are classified into two categories: basic and clinical classes. Similar to the required classes of other medical school departments, the basic classes include Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology… etc . In particular, we emphasize Biochemistry and Immunology more than other classes, due to their importance and close relevance to medical technology. In other words, these two classes are basic prerequisite which allow medical technologists to understand general medical knowledge. In addition, laboratory lectures associated with these basic classes are essential for students to be competent MTs, and the department requires students to experience hands on practice of assay lab testing. As a result, graduates are exceptionally qualified lab technitions.

The clinical classes, including Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical physiology, Blood bank, Clinical Hematology, and Clinical Serology, cover most of the professional content of this field. Class organization will allow students to have complete knowledge of the medical technology to prepare them mentally and physically for their last-year in-hospital training. This real world training will require students to practice what they have learned giving them valuable practical experience. Our main goal is to prepare students for employment in the real world.

Due to recent advances in biotechnology, the departments teaching and research also focus on the application of modern biotechnologies towards diagnostic science. In addition to hospital employment, students will have a variety of other choices after graduation.
